MOVE CURRICULUM
In addition to achieving Middle States Accreditation for excellence in education, The Jardine Academy is also dedicated to teaching essential movement skills to increase motoric independence necessary for sitting, standing, and walking. On May 22, 2007 The Jardine Academy, a NJ Department of Education approved private school, was acknowledged as New Jersey's first MOVE Model Site. This designation is given to school's who are successfully utilizing the MOVE Curriculum, have onsite MOVE Model Site Trainers and are eager to share the students' remarkable progress with other educators, therapists and families. The MOVE Curriculum has been integrated into The Academy's curriculum for more than nine years; the results have been remarkable.
Maintaining a sitting position and the ability to move while sitting are important skills for future independence.
Walking forward; transition from standing to walking/walking to standing; walking backward; turning while walking are all essential mobility skills.
Equipment is used:
• to place students in positions for performing functional activities such as moving from one place to another, self-feeding, self-controlled toileting, table work and leisure activities.
• to allows the staff to physically manage the student while teaching appropriate movement patterns
• to allows the students to practice motor skills independently
• to help improve the bone and joint health of the students and to increase the muscle strength of the extensor musculature of the body.
The ability to independently transition from sit to stand/stand to sit; pivot while standing offers the student freedom to initiate self directed mobility.
Not all environments are barrier free. Stairs can present a barrier to participation or a roadway to fun.
Full participation in life is what MOVE is about. Newly learned skills provide for new and exciting experiences.
Creator of the MOVE Curriculum, Linda Bidabe, has conducted training workshops in the United States, Europe, Australia, New Zealand, Japan, Singapore and South America. (MOVE International, 2007). For more information
